Uber and Chinese autonomous driving technology developer Momenta announced plans to start testing self-driving, level 4 cars in Munich, Germany, in 2026, on Monday, September 8. The move is part of a strategy to expand its presence in the robo-taxi market amid growing competition, Reuters reported.
The partnership between Uber and Momenta was first announced in May this year to introduce self-driving cars to international markets outside the United States and China.
Level 4 autonomous technology allows a car to move without human intervention in certain, predetermined areas and under certain conditions.
Uber is actively trying to gain a foothold in the robo-taxi industry, entering into partnerships with various companies. Among its partners are Waymo (a unit of Alphabet), electric car manufacturer Lucid, and self-driving system developer WeRide. This comes as Tesla is also expanding its own autonomous taxi services.
Momenta, for its part, says its driver assistance software has already been installed in 400,000 cars through partnerships with automakers.
