The German automobile concern Volkswagen became the largest seller of electric cars in Europe in 2025.
The sales results for 2025 suggest that the Wolfsburg-based automaker may push the American electric car manufacturer Tesla out of the leadership position.
The Tagesschau authors cite an analysis by the consulting firm JATO. According to these data, VW sold 274,278 electric cars last year. This figure is 56% higher than in 2024. It is noted that this result was primarily due to sales of new VW models, particularly the mid-range electric car ID.7.
As for Tesla, its sales in Europe decreased by 27% in 2025 compared to 2024. This may be because the manufacturer continued to rely on sales of its “outdated” models in Europe. Another possible reason for the decline in sales, the authors call image problems related to politics. In particular, in Germany, Tesla is considered the company with the worst reputation.
At the same time, the Tesla Model Y became the best-selling electric car model in Europe in 2025. The second place was taken by the Elroq from the automaker Skoda, which is part of the VW concern.
