Xiaomi unveils its first AI model

Chinese smartphone and electric car manufacturer Xiaomi has unveiled its first open artificial intelligence (AI) model that mimics human logical thinking, according to the company’s press service.

This model is open source and contains 7 billion different parameters. The company emphasizes that, according to performance test results, MiMo outperformed o1-mini from OpenAI and QwQ-32B-Preview from Alibaba Group.

MiMo is Xiaomi’s first major speech model. The company says it was created by a dedicated Core artificial intelligence team using an experience-based learning method.

Earlier, Chinese media reported that in December 2024, the company purchased about 10 thousand GPUs to train MiMo.

Besides, Xiaomi tried to hire Luo Fuli, the developer of another Chinese AI model, DeepSeek. However, she refused.

Xiaomi’s AI model comes at a time when Chinese tech giants with large financial resources are beginning to demonstrate their capabilities in creating basic models. They see great commercial potential in combining their products with AI.

According to the South China Morning Post, in May last year, Xiaomi announced plans to develop large-scale language models to integrate its technology into electric cars, smartphones, and home appliances.
