XREAL a01 Smart Glasses: A New Way to Watch Movies?

XREAL a01 Smart Glasses A New Way to Watch Movies

The XREAL a01 smart glasses, released in May 2026, offer a unique approach to watching movies, but are they effective? Priced at around $300, these glasses function primarily as an external monitor, requiring a USB-C connection to a device for power.

While optimized for gaming, the a01 also caters to movie enthusiasts. I connected them to my laptop to watch David Lynch’s “Wild at Heart.” The dual mini OLED panels deliver a vibrant 1080p image, creating an experience reminiscent of a home projector in a dark room.

However, the practicality of wearing glasses while sitting next to a laptop raises questions. XREAL claims the device provides an immersive experience akin to a 147-inch screen, yet the proximity of the laptop diminishes the novelty.

Additionally, the glasses can serve as a “second monitor,” but this functionality is limited. Users may find it challenging to multitask while wearing them, as the projection dominates the field of view.

Connecting the a01 to a phone is possible, but compatibility issues may arise, especially with older devices. The glasses can enhance mobility, allowing users to watch movies on the go, although they still require the phone’s screen to remain active.

For a more isolated streaming experience, users can pair the glasses with the Beam Pro, a mini-tablet costing an extra $200. This setup allows for downloading content directly onto the Beam, eliminating the need for a laptop.

Heat generation is another concern, as the a01 can become warm during use, causing discomfort. Despite this, the glasses are lightweight and comfortable compared to other smart glasses on the market.

XREAL is continuously improving its product line, with the upcoming Project Aura promising enhanced features like native hand tracking and greater interactivity. This new device may address some of the limitations found in the a01.

Ultimately, while the a01 provides an intriguing glimpse into the future of viewing technology, it may not satisfy traditional movie lovers who prefer larger screens. As the industry evolves, it will be interesting to see how user experiences adapt with new innovations.
