Atlassian Central, the world’s tallest hybrid timber tower, has been completed in Sydney, Australia.
The 180-meter-tall building is designed to be the headquarters for technology company Atlassian.
The 39-story skyscraper features a unique hybrid structural system, in which concrete cores support massive timber floors and internal structures wrapped in metal. The building has seven “mega-floors” that are spaced every four floors to divide the skyscraper vertically into what the design team has called “habitats.”
These predominantly timber environments will house office space, as well as multi-story atriums and elevated parks. The design team says the use of timber has reduced the building’s overall weight and carbon footprint, while steel and concrete provide strength and stability.
The project is expected to reduce initial carbon emissions by 50 percent compared with a conventional steel-and-concrete office tower. The team also aims to improve operational energy efficiency by 50 percent compared to conventional buildings.
The project is scheduled for completion by the end of this year, with the facade currently being completed.
