The film Dirty Dancing is getting a sequel, being produced by Lionsgate. The project will be produced by Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, the team known for the Hunger Games franchise. The script will be written by Kim Rosenstock, and filming is planned to begin this year.
Jennifer Grey will return to the role of Frances “Baby” Houseman, who will also join the work on the film as an executive producer. Jonathan Levine, who was previously considered for the director position, will serve as an executive producer on the project.
Jennifer Grey said that the role of Baby remains special to her, and she has long wondered what the heroine’s life could be like many years later. The actress noted that work on the sequel became possible only after the formation of a team to which she entrusted the legacy of the original film.
The 1987 film Dirty Dancing quickly became a cult classic, garnering worldwide acclaim and earning the filmmakers an Academy Award for Best Original Song. The film starred Patrick Swayze, who passed away in 2009, so the sequel will be a return to the classic story without one of its key characters.
