Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for “The Social Network,” a sequel to the 2010 film “The Social Network,” which told the story of Facebook’s creation. The new film will focus on the events that followed the social network’s rise to become one of the world’s most influential technological platforms.
The film stars Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, Bill Burr, and Jeremy Strong. Strong will portray Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg on screen. Previously, Jesse Eisenberg played this role in “The Social Network.”
Aaron Sorkin has returned to work on the sequel. If he was a screenwriter on the original film, he will now also direct it. Sorkin won an Oscar for his script for “The Social Network.”
The plot of “Social Payback” is based on real events. The film will tell the story of former Facebook engineer Frances Haugen, played by Mikey Madison, and The Wall Street Journal journalist Jeff Horvitz, played by Jeremy Allen White.
It was their work that led to the emergence of a series of investigative journalism articles, “The Facebook Files”, published in 2021. The materials were based on internal company documents. They contained information about the platform’s impact on users, including teenagers, as well as on the company’s decision-making mechanisms.
The investigation also focused on Facebook’s role in the spread of disinformation and content that was linked to political violence in different countries around the world.
