The coronation of Charles III cost the UK more than €86 million

The coronation of Charles III cost British taxpayers at least €86 million.

The Guardian writes about this, referring to a report by the UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport, which worked with the royal house on the coronation.

The report notes that the ministry successfully handled the coronation, which was “enjoyed by many millions of people in the UK and around the world.” Charles’s coronation at Westminster Abbey in 2023 was watched on television by 20 million people in Britain, while his mother’s, Elizabeth II, funeral in 2022 was watched by 29 million Britons.

The ministry spent approximately €60 million, with the remaining €26 million on security for the celebration.

Graeme Smith, CEO of the Republic organization, which campaigns for the abolition of the monarchy and its replacement with an elected head of state, called the coronation an “obscene” waste of taxpayer money.

According to him, the Ministry of Defense, London Transport, fire brigades, and local councils also incurred costs related to the coronation. Estimates suggest that the coronation costs range from €120 million to €300 million.
