Among them is actress Nicole Kidman. In 2017, she pledged to work with at least one female director every 18 months to restore gender balance in Hollywood. Since then, the actress has worked with 19 female directors on films and TV series.

Time notes that Jordan Chiles and Aja Wilson made the cover because no other field has glorified women as much as sports last year. The magazine also adds that the athletes became friends on the eve of the Olympic Games in Paris.

The list also includes 72-year-old Frenchwoman Giselle Pelico. Between 2011 and 2020, her husband drugged her and recruited dozens of other men online to rape her at home when she was unconscious. Giselle Pelico decided to make the case public and became a new symbol of the fight for women’s rights. Her husband was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The list of honorees includes 13 women, including artist Laufi, actress Anna Sawai, Feeding America CEO Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, reproductive rights activist Amanda Zurawski, Gambian women’s rights activist Fatou Baldeh, activist and writer Raquel Willis, actress Olivia Munn, Bobbie co-founder and CEO Laura Modi, and conservationist Purnima Devi Barman.

Time notes that the chosen heroines struggle every day with the problems faced by women around the world. These include gender inequality, human rights violations, and climate change.
