In January 2025, the US dollar’s position in global trade strengthened. For the first time, dollar transfers exceeded 50% of all international currency traffic sent via SWIFT. Bloomberg writes about it.
The share of payments worldwide involving the dollar rose to 50.2% in January, up from 49.1% a month earlier. This is the highest figure since the Belgium-headquartered consortium revised how it collects transaction data in mid-2023.
As the world’s main reserve currency, the dollar continues to account for the vast majority of traffic on SWIFT. Over the past year and a half, it has averaged about 48% of global traffic.
The next largest currency, the euro, averages about 23%, followed by the British pound, which has 7.1%.
