Uber Launches ‘Uber Drift’ Service for Tourists in Tokyo

Uber invests $300 million in launching robotaxis

Uber has announced the launch of a new service, Uber Drift, in Tokyo, designed to let visiting tourists experience Japan’s drifting culture through the Uber mobile app. This initiative is part of Uber’s global “Go Anywhere” program, offering users unique travel experiences worldwide.

Uber Drift provides simplified access to automotive subculture, historically difficult for foreign visitors to engage with, as exploring Japan’s drifting scene used to require local connections, Japanese language proficiency, and knowledge of lesser-known locations outside Tokyo. Participants will be picked up directly from their Tokyo hotels in Uber Black vehicles and transported to the Mobara Twin Circuit, renowned for its challenging layout and technical turns.

Upon arrival at the circuit, tourists will have the opportunity to participate in sessions accompanied by professional Formula Drift-licensed drivers using iconic Japanese vehicles such as the Nissan Silvia S15 and Nissan 180SX. A highlight of the experience will be tandem drifting, where two cars navigate turns in controlled drifts at minimal distance, reaching speeds up to 100 km/h. The program duration totals 90 minutes.

Uber emphasized its commitment to preserving an authentic Japanese automotive culture, while ensuring a premium service level, including app-based booking and transfers. Strict safety regulations require participants to wear helmets. The organizers have avoided excessive commercialization, focusing on authenticity.

Daily participation is limited to four groups. Bookings for Uber Drift will open through the Uber app on May 27, 2026, with the sessions scheduled from June 3 to July 1. The service primarily targets international tourists who want an introduction to Japan’s drifting subculture without navigating the complexities of local networks. Due to limited capacity, securing a spot for a session may be more challenging than participating in the event itself.
